Did We Fix Martin's New Inception Guitar?!

    1. This D-19 ver. 2.0 is NOT the “most polarizing Martin guitar in years”. Go look up the D-28 Louvin Brothers, the 000X Hippie, the DX-Woodstock 50th, the D-420 Proposition 64, the D-17 Squadron, and especially the D-200 Deluxe and the American Chopper Custom - and tell me I’m wrong. 2. Although Chris Martin was up front about the finish applied to the D-19s’ “cosmetically challenged” Adirondack tops, in my opinion Martin could have gone a step further and included a photo or photos with each guitar of its top BEFORE it was refinished. Unfortunately, Martin’s Marketing Department would probably feel that was too great a risk and be worried doing that might hurt sales of the D-19. (However, I have a beautiful Custom Shop D-21 (28 spec) that sounds fantastic, with “wild grain” East Indian Rosewood back and sides. I have photos of the raw back pieces at the Martin Custom Shop before my guitar was put together, and to me it adds an additional page or two to my guitar’s story). 3. For those pointing out the D-19’s price, go look up the price of a New D-18 Custom Shop with an Adirondack top. A quick online search reveals around $3800 to $4500 and up. If you don’t like the D-19’s finish, there are plenty of other choices for you. 4. As Cooper’s Demo playing in the video shows, this particular D-19 sounds fantastic. And as jamieanderson3279 states above - “Listen to the sound. If you like it get it now while you can. If you don’t like it just go get something you do like.”

    Yes, you can hear the difference. And I even if you cannot tell the difference, on a subliminal level you will be able to appreciate the less compressed, more defined, twangy, smacking and lively tone of actual single coils. And if you cannot tell the difference, then you won't be able to identify many other nuances. 12:39 That's simply not true. That's not how a noisegate works. A noisegate will kill all your input signal as long as the signal's strength does not meet a specific threshold. Once you're loud enough everything will be let through. It is binary and will not selectively affect specific frequencies.

  • @romzen
    @romzen 10 годин тому

    People should stop calling these noiseless pickups single coils. They clearly sound more like humbuckers and lose all the twang and articulation of single coils. I have a Player Tele with Alnico Vs and it sounds much better than that Player Plus. Almost as good as the Yosemite Tele.

    A couple of months ago I was in the market for a guitar. I have a music store a short distance from home. I have NO real knowledge about what makes a good guitar. I only knew I wanted nylon strings. The store had a variety of steel string acoustic guitars but only 2 or 3 different nylon string classical guitars. I was not planning on learning to play classical music. I wanted to just do accompaniment for folk music. I had narrowed it down to two guitars, one of which was the Yamaha CG122MCH. I don't remember what the other one was. It was yellow in color and heavier than the Yamaha. I got the Yamaha as the weight was less, it sounded really nice to me, and I liked the color/finish better. From this video, it seems I didn't totally waste my money. Whew! I'm retired so have plenty of time to practice. So far, I've really been enjoying my practice. It was a good decision on my part and I don't always make good decisions. 😅

    Nice. I would be really swayed by a Gibson headstock shape, on an Epiphone. Epiphone has made some excellent guitars over the years that were obvious "cousins" to Gibson models. Functionality and price point, swapable p'ups and pots. The MIK Epi Sheraton back as far as the 90s(?), with the 5-pc neck, I always thought was a killer value too. Great great neck feel, to me. A cousin, and obvious Epiphone. But a great guitar.

    My RSS02t played awful from Sweetwater, lots of fret sprout and several high frets, impossible to set up well. After a few hours of work on the neck, it plays well now. The P-90s sound good but are noisy. I waited months for a lighter one, at 7lbs, 10oz, it’s lighter than a Les Paul but not as light as a chambered guitar could (and should) be.

    We have to talk about this. The current es345 is nothing like the earlier guitars. The Varitone and stereo are "no more" because it never sold well and the current es345 is - an es335 with a little bit of bling and nothing else. A sliver of Adirondack (the main lump of timber is maple, the spruce isn't significant acoustic bracing, it's a thin shim) is Wow!-Whoopee!-Great!...... but it's unlikely to bring more to the party than normal variations in different examples anyway. The current es345 is - an es335 with lovely inlays and double binding. Which is OK! Very handsome, very distinguished and............an excellent guitar! I'm far from knocking it - it's a sensible adjustment of the range. The top-model twin-output es345 didn't sell because of the expense of a second amplifier, carting the whole rig around and the rotary Varitone wasn't very logical in selecting the settings - drops in output etc. - and it's a bitch with the gain that we use so much today but didn't exist all when the es345 was being designed. Today, twin-channels amps make the es345 redundant but even earlier days, a two-amp arrangement was best served by a footswitch and any guitar you like. Why does this matter? If you're buying new, it doesn't - you can see, touch, hear and choose - it's all good. But if you are seeking a real top-model es345, you're into the used area - and it's a minefield. So many es345s were modified to transform them into simple mono use and the Varitone either by-passed or re-wired so you don't really know what you're getting. Pristine-and-virgin models are actually very, very rare, the stereo concept didn't work out at all and the 5-setting rotary Varitone doesn't work as well as a Switchmaster p/up selector because It "blips" on pass-through from one sound to another (you can hear this on some recordings - ("Rock me Baby", Jefferson Airplane - Bless it's Pointed Little Head) So you have to go to it case-by-case and try it "hands on" and in the real world, you're almost certainly trying out a previous owner's attempt to convert his es345 into an es335. Very, very hard to get a real one or even to know that it is one. Gibson changed the stereo jack output arrangement more than once in trying to cut the cost and intimidation factor but...so have owners. The originals were supplied with a "Y" lead but...how many still come with that? Of Bigsbys, I can and will add nothing except to say that changing strings involves using three hands, an automotive valve spring compressor, it can have your eye out and you'll only use it twice. OK, kidding! I don't use them at all - that's what I'm saying. If you're looking for an original es345......best of luck. Even such as 70s Japanese knock-offs like the excellent Antoria 2345 didn't sell and are very thin on the ground. Fact is - at the time, nobody wanted them except Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane) and that was only because he knew absolutely nothing about electric guitars, wanted to make sure he spent as much advance money as possible so he just picked up the priciest thing they had. Which worked for him. Most would say the es345 is a "dog". In the fullness of time (which is now a long time ago), we found that the "extras" of the ultra-versatile es345 meant the loss of the core sounds of the es335. Any dealer will tell you different but it's impossible now to know - so many have been butchered to convert them to mono es335s and then butchered back again. The cast-iron certainty though is that there was no way to by-pass the Varitone so a trade-off signal loss to access the coil taps was inevitable. So - the good news. An early-ish es345 isn't an especially valuable vintage guitar and if it's been modded, it's cheap. Nothing easier than checking it for es335 spec or doing that yourself. It has nothing near the value of an early es335 in good nick but it's just as good if you install an es335 harness and older ones are about a kilo lighter - for some reason.
